"I use contrary-ism in every part of my life. In design ... I'm always trying to turn things upside down and see if they look any better," -Tibor Kalman, 1999
Radical, passionate and contrary.and evermore the optimist, Tibor Kalman was well known for the clever designs of his company M&Co , redefining the eclectic approach to graphic design. Kalman's work ranged from journalism, advertising, and publishing to watches, paper weights, rulers, album covers, t-shirts, film titles, commercials, urban guidelines, and more. Kalman's approach to design combined innovative ideas, a sense of humor and sophisticated style with fabulous results.
Born in Budapest in 1949, Kalman and his parents were forced to flee the Soviet invasion in 1956, and settle in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. This experience led him to develop an interest in Americana culture. Kalman's radical politics and his radical designs were inextricably linked. |
